Every year I cover a selection of Wedding Bootcamp photography workshops. The workshops are to help other up and coming wedding photographers understand the business and skills needed. Being one of the Sony UK ambassadors I have the pleasure of teaming up with suppliers to make the experience come together.
The Wedding Bootcamp at Wivenhoe House Wivenhoe Park, Colchester started with fully booked workshop. One of the first things covered was branding, and how to promote yourself in today’s wedding market, after the short presentation we headed to the first location covering lighting indoors. Looking at the different ways to light the bride and groom from natural light, LED lighting and flash, it is essential to know when to use flash and to combine it with natural light. One other subject I covered and demonstrated was white balance and how to get the perfect colour temperature every time.
One of my favourite tools is the Lumu; it is a small device that plugs into your iPhone. The Lumu will turn your phone into Colour and Light meter. For more information on this take a minute to watch my YouTube review on the Lumu.
The second location of the day and to demonstrate how to be creative with lighting and white balance. After everyone had the chance to capture a shot we set up the bride for the reveal shot. The reveal shot is when the bride makes her way down the winding staircase to the ceremony. It is good to plan your shots and no at what point to capture the bride as she makes her way.
With lunch provided it was time to have a break and look at the morning’s work. As everyone had there lunch FotoSpeed was busy printing everyone’s images from the morning shoot, boy there were some stunners. I believe in the power of print and think every wedding photographer should print their pictures. You can look at your images on a screen, but it is not an image until printed out.

Time to head outside and cover some location scouting. I pre-scouted the locations the day before, picking places that wedding photographers wouldn’t usually use. My goal is to show people how to look at things differently, seeing not whats in front of them but what they can create. We managed to cover two locations using natural light and flash before heading in.
Rounding up the day with some more printing and finishing off with the business behind the camera. I talked about pricing and how to price yourself, in this competitive market. Finishing the day on album design using Fundy Album builder along with showing the finished album supplied by Folio Albums.
